An essential part of considering a career in policing is clearly understanding the role and responsibilities of a police officer in today’s society. It is imperative that you take time to seriously consider whether you have the necessary qualities, characteristics and strengths needed to adequately perform the job of a police officer. |

The following are what you should contemplate before submitting your application to become a Central Saanich Police Officer: | ||

| • | Are you aware of the daily issues facing police officers? | |
| • | Do I live a lifestyle that exemplifies high moral and ethical standards? | |
| • | Am I emotionally stable and mature? | |
| • | Is a healthy lifestyle and physical fitness part of my daily life? | |
| • | Am I in good physical health without any medical conditions that would affect my ability to do police work? | |
| • | Have I explored and understand the nature of police work and the variety of situations I may face as a police officer? | |
| • | Am I prepared to work shifts up to 12 hours in duration? Have I considered the effect shift work has on my personal life? | |
| • | Do I have a demonstrated ability to work with little supervision individually and in a team environment? | |
| • | Have I demonstrated that I can be assertive in situations that require it? | |
| • | Can I work effectively with people with diverse backgrounds and ideas in a wide variety of situations? | |
| • | Do I have the demonstrated ability to make sound decisions under stress? | |
| • | If required, would I be able to use deadly force? | |

Basic Qualifications | ||
| • | Minimum of 19 years of age (copy of birth certificate is required); | |
| • | Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigrant (proof of status is required); | |
| • | No criminal record; | |
| • | Minimum uncorrected vision - 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye, correctable to 20/20, 20/30; | |
| • | Corneal laser surgery is acceptable provided that six months has elapsed since the surgery; | |
| • | Color blindness is not acceptable; | |
| • | Must possess a valid BC Drivers Licence, with a record indicative of responsible driving habits; | |
| • | Education - Minimum of a high school diploma; | |
| • | Must be in excellent physical condition and be able to pass a rigorous physical fitness test and comprehensive medical examination; | |
| • | Excellent verbal and written communications skills; | |
| • | Computer skills and keyboarding ability preferred; | |
| • | Ability to successfully undergo an extensive background investigation involving work place, personal, financial and neighbourhood inquiries. | |

Tuition Fees | ||
|
2009 tuition for Block I and Block III at JIBC - $9,500.00 (to be paid by applicant). | ||
| While training at the Justice Institute of BC, the recruit candidate receives: | ||
| • | Probationary Constable salary; | |

| • | Payroll deduction for tuition fees. | |
