Distracted Driving Legislation Now Enforced by Police

February 1, 2010

Drivers are reminded that the one-month education and awareness period associated to British Columbia's new Distracted Driving legislation has expired.

Police officers are now authorized to issue Provincial Violation tickets for offences relating to use of any handheld cell phone or electronic device while operating a motor vehicle in BC.

Distraction by cell phone or electronic devices while driving puts you at a significantly higher risk of collisions that can result in deaths, injuries, and property damage.  Police enforcement of the new legislation is aimed at avoiding those costs.

Fines for offences under the legislation are set at $167.

Langford Man Arrested for Fraud

January 20, 2010

Central Saanich Police have recommended a charge of Utter Forged Document against a Langford male after a Tanner Ridge resident noticed his bank account was drained of over $1,500.00.

On January 8, 2010 the victim went to withdraw money from his bank and noticed there was over $1,500.00 missing from his account. Investigation determined that the victim had left his cheque book in his insecure vehicle and several cheques were stolen. The thief had carefully taken cheques from the middle of the cheque book so the owner would not be alerted until it was too late.

The accused had written the cheque out in his name and cashed it at a local bank.

On January 13, 2010 police arrested the accused, a 33 year old male from Langford, and released him on a Promise to Appear.

Central Saanich Police remind people to always lock their vehicles and to remove any valuables.
