Central Saanich crime severity index lowest in province

Figures from the recently published 2021 and 2022 Crime Severity Index (CSI) place Central Saanich as having one of the lowest rates in Canada and the lowest in BC.

The CSI is a police-reported measure of crime that measures the volume and severity of police-reported crime in the country for communities whether they are served by the RCMP or a community policing agency. The index outlines values for 330 police services that police communities with populations of 10,000 or more.

In 2022, Central Saanich placed 318 out of 330 communities with a value of 26.4; the average value was 78.1 and the highest was 557.1. The CSI improved from 2021 when Central Saanich was second lowest in the province.

“This is an outstanding result that reinforces the quality of our community as well as our policing services,” said Central Saanich Police Chief Ian Lawson.

“I am proud of our police service, and thank our dedicated members for the critical role they play in keeping our community safe,” said Central Saanich Mayor and Police Board Chair Ryan Windsor, while further acknowledging the exceptional contributions of the volunteer police board members.
