As holiday celebrations ramp up, the Central Saanich Police Service is increasing patrols as part of ICBC’s Light Up the Province CounterAttack campaign, which targets impaired driving.
“If your holiday plans include alcohol or drugs, make a plan to get home safely. Use a designated driver, taxi, rideshare, or public transit,” said Central Saanich Police Service Chief Constable Ian Lawson.
Impairment reduces vision, slows reaction time, and impairs judgment—putting everyone at risk. On Vancouver Island, impaired driving causes an average of eight deaths and 295 injuries every year.
Key Statistics
- Every year, impaired driving contributes to an average of 2,126 crashes, injuring 1,269 people and killing 65 people across the province.
- 53% of impaired-related crashes occur on weekends.
- 36% happen between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.
- Young drivers (16–25) make up 20% of impaired drivers, despite being only 12% of B.C.’s driving population.
- Males account for 69% of all impaired drivers in crashes.
Penalties for driving under the influence range from immediate roadside prohibitions that include 24-hour to 90-day driving suspensions, vehicle impoundments, administrative driving prohibitions, fines, jail time, mandatory rehabilitation and the installation of ignition interlock in your vehicle.
